Shoes for slimmer pants

When it comes to matching shoes, it mostly depends on the pants you're going to be wearing. If you're planning to wear a slim khaki or a skinny jeans, then opt for shoes which are narrower and less bulky. Leave your Nike Air Force 1 at home. It's all about balance.

Suit and suit jacket?

We realize a lot of our Malaysian friends commonly use the term "suit" when they are actually just talking about a suit jacket. It is acceptable not to know the proper names for different jackets such as a blazer, sport coat and dinner jacket, but we think it is important to understand the proper definition of a suit and to use the term appropriately.

A suit is defined as "a set of garments made from the same cloth, consisting of at least a jacket and trousers". The keyword here is "set", which means that a suit jacket or a suit pant by its own is not considered a suit. The same thing goes for a car, which is made up of multiple parts, one cannot refer to the engine alone as the car, can he? He is simply referring to the car engine.

How formal is a formal shirt?

There's simply just too many Malaysians who jump into conclusion that a dress shirt (which is the proper term for the widely used formal shirt) or a dress pant is considered formal, when they are actually not. A single piece of clothing by itself does make the entire outfit formal, its all the right pieces together which does. Similarly, a person who's wearing a dress shirt, necktie, suit jacket (yes, the "coat" is called a suit jacket and not just suit) and jeans, does that make the look formal? It's not about a single piece, but all the pieces together.

The knot you should use

You know what, screw the posts you've seen here about which knot to wear for this collar or which knot for that collar and whatever else. Stick to the four-in-hand or the latest knot we showed—the Prince Albert. Ditch the half-windsor and full-windsor which your dad taught you and go for either one of these two knots. It's just slimmer, younger, more modern looking, and you're going to feel that way as well.

The Prince Albert knot

Want a knot that is thicker than a four-in-hand but less bulky than a half-windsor? Do you find the four-in-hand to be too casual looking and the half-windsor being a little too formal? Love the four-in-hand but tie always comes out too long when done?

This knot is going to be perfect for you.

1. Begin by passing the wide end over and back behind the narrow end.

2. Pass the wide end again over the narrow end.

3. Wrap the wide end below the narrow end.

4. Instead of going through the loop like you would for a four-in-hand, repeat the second step by bringing the wide end back over the narrow end.

5. Pass the wide end behind the knot and through the loop around your neck.

6. Pull the wide end underneath the outer layer of the knot.

7. If both ends don't meet perfectly, simply start over and adjust the length of your tie accordingly. Make sure your collar falls nicely all around, and center the knot as best you can.

Granoff suit modified

Remember we had the custom suit from Granoff few months back? We figured the pants was not slim enough therefore we sent it back to get it tapered. Here's the new result:

Why do men never fasten the last button of a suit?

It was said that King Edward VII, “Bertie”, son of Victoria (1841 – 1910, King 1901 - 1910) was so heavy that he could not get the bottom button fastened on his vest; or to be more historically kind, maybe he just forgot. His subjects taking it as a fashion statement followed his lead and today most men’s suits, sports jackets or vests are not designed to button the bottom button.

The tradition of not buttoning the bottom button may have also come from the early waistcoats, which were very long. It may have been out of necessity of being able to walk that the bottom buttons were left undone.

Although leaving the bottom button of a suit jacket undone started back from history, they do serve a purpose as well; suit jackets are designed to flare away at the bottom since the hips are broader than the waist. Modern suits are all cut with this in mind, and thus the bottom button should never be used.

Sunglasses 101

We realize that there are many articles out there which write about the the best type of sunglasses for your kind of face and the best frame shape for your particular face shape. But if there's one thing we feel most guys are doing wrong when it comes to wearing sunglasses is wearing the wrong kind at the wrong time. What we're trying to say is not to wear your sporty shades for every single outing. Those are clearly meant for your sporting activities and are not suitable for every single occasion. Go for something classic and subtle instead.

Try something like these when you're hitting the streets:

Sunglasses by Tom Ford

What to wear for weddings?

When heading to a wedding, never wear jeans. Sure you'll get individuals in Malaysia who couldn't care less about going to these functions in jeans. Think about the bride and groom's point of view for one second, it's the most important day of their lives, at least try and acknowledge that by dressing a little more appropriate rather than wearing the same outfit when you're heading to the mall.

Certainly there are some bride and grooms which would not mind their guests coming in looking totally casual, but why choose to do it? The least you could do is put on something to make your outfit a little more formal like a dress pant and a tie to show that you are indeed going for a special event and not to some old boring wedding (although it may actually be one).

Here, Chris wore a short sleeve shirt to get out of the regular conformity. He also paired his tie and shirt with light colors to bring out a livelier vibe. A little hint of bright color on his belt to make him stand out; and of course, to match his overall light-colored look, he slipped on a pair of brown dress shoes.

You may choose to leave the suit jacket at home.

New slim ties

To those who are not familiar with slim ties—these are NOT skinny ties. Slim ties can be used for both formal and casual wear. Unless you’re a hard-core fashion guy who favors a super-skinny tie, stick with one that measures about two and a half to three inches at its widest point. It will be narrower than traditional ties, but not by too much. Tie one on and you’ll look modern and sophisticated.

I've actually had a number of people come up to me and go "Hey Jin, are slim ties suitable for office wear?". Yes, they absolutely are, most guys mistake slim for skinny ties; those are only suitable for casual wear and not for professional use, anything around 2 inches is categorized under skinny and any thinner will be followed by super-skinny.
